JOURNEY OF CHEF TONNY
“Looking back, for more than 23 years ago, I have been working as a chef in various Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong. I started as an apprentice when I was just 17 years old, moving from East Ocean Seafood Restaurant, Victoria City Restaurant, Sha Tin Kitchen (where I was a shareholder), to Grand Hong Kong Restaurant before finally setting up my own Tonny Restaurant with my own hard- earned savings and financial assistance from my brother, in Singapore.
Over these years, I have been interviewed and featured in numerous newspapers, magazines, radio programs and even local TV cooking shows like 三茶一汤, 我要当食神,名厨上菜,面对面, etc. The most memorable TV cooking show has to be 名厨上菜, which took place just one week after the opening of Tonny Restaurant. The filming was in my hometown, Hong Kong and the shooting was executed in a farm with the Media Corp TV crews, where we featured the making of the traditional Hong Kong style Poon Chooi (盆菜). In the cooking show, I prepared a few signature dishes from my own menu for the accompanying audience. I sincerely thank Media Corp for giving me this opportunity to showcase my style of cooking, dishes and my restaurant.
For many years, my passion and determination to deliver good quality food for my customers are the pillars that have supported me through many hardships and struggles. Today, my restaurant has achieved a sound reputation. I am thankful for the valuable support from our customers and a lot of them have eventually become friends. My dishes are well- known to have a “homely” flavor (私房菜) which I take pride in. Looking ahead, I hope to open a franchise of smaller- themed restaurants and continue to create more delightful and value-for-money delicacies for the love of our loyal supporters and customers.”
